Home win for El Cid

El Cid gave a dry and warm welcome to a strong San Miguel team sitting in 3rd place in the Winter League.  We knew the opposition would be tough but Derek Randall’s squad set about the task making home advantage pay.

At the midway stage El Cid were up on 4 of the 5 Rinks and looking comfortable for a good win but San Miguel fought back closing the gap then taking the lead on rink 2 winning by 4 shots.

El Cid’s normally reliable all ladies team on rink 5 got off to a good start taking 5 shots on end 2 but found themselves 16 – 8 down after 13 ends and despite fighting back lost by 4 shots.

Rink 3 saw Jim Howden’s team 14 – 3 up after 10 ends. An enforced change when John Olliffe fell ill to be replaced by Ian Brown on the 12th end affected the game but the team managed to see out the game for a 3 shots win.

Top team on the day were on Rink 6 where Floyd Williams, Pat Arnett, Peter Morgan and Clive Scott who despite losing the first end went on to lead all the way to the end winning by 9 shots.

Pat Metcalfe’s team were 14 – 6 up after 10 ends but a strong San Miguel team came back to be only 1 shot behind going into the last end. In an exciting finish Pat Metcalfe with the last bowl trailed the jack back to give her team of Ros Dingle, Shirley Payne, Anita Randall 5 shots and a 22 – 16 win.

The overall final score was 8 points to 4 for El Cid.

After the match both teams enjoyed El Cid’s excellent Carvery which Lin Miller, San Miguel captain said was worth the trip alone. Well done to El Cid who travel to Bonalba next week.
