The 2025 Spanish National Singles competition kicked off on Monday, May 5th at Indalo Bowls Club, located in Costa Almeria.

The event began with round-robin matches across both the men’s and ladies’ leagues, which are scheduled to run through Friday, May 9th.

Over 70 competitors from bowls clubs across the Costa Blanca and Costa Almeria regions are taking part in this prestigious tournament.

Represented clubs include: Greenland’s, Quesada, San Miguel, San Luis, Country Bowls, El Cid, Indalo, Almeria, Mojacar, Zurgena, and Cabrera.

Following the conclusion of the round-robin stage, the top performers—including group winners, runners-up, and third-placed players—moved on to the knockout stages which got underway with the quarterfinals on Saturday, May 10th, followed by the semifinals and finals for both men and ladies on Sunday, May 11th.

Competition has been fierce, with many exciting matches played under beautiful sunny skies, though slight afternoon winds have added an extra challenge.

The stakes are high, as winners of the men’s and ladies’ singles titles will go on to represent Spain at the 2026 World Champion of Champions tournament in Australia.

With the round-robin phase now complete, anticipation builds as the knockout rounds prepare to determine who will take home national glory.

The quarter finals took place on Saturday where, from our local clubs, Lisa Bonsor and Janet Jukes just missed out, losing on their tie breakers, however, Pete Bonsor of Greenlands was successful getting through to the semi finals where he beat the current holder Graham Shoots of Zurgena bowls club, on Sunday morning, also on a tie break.

And once again, after lunch, there was no stopping the current National Champion, the tournament’s in-form player, as he went on to win the trophy beating Brian Willerton of Mojacar Bowls Club in a scintillating final.

In the Ladies final, on home turf, Izzie McKay of Indalo, claimed her first National title with victory over Claire Hughes of Cabrera Bowls Club.
